Good time to start building or dusting off those Sailplanes.
PRESIDENTS CORNER
Those of you who missed the past meeting will never know the Tom Huckaby way of putting hard wood mounting points in balsa. It was Toms turn for our new "Tip of the Month" portion of the meetings. It would have been worth being there just to see him go through the process, and we didnt even need ban aids! Next month will be Phil Myers turn to share his tip on making our building easier.
This past meeting there was an item brought forth that I believe needs every club member attention. It brought forth that there have been several occasions of people flying whom no one knew, and whose AMA card did not have our club sticker attached. Club members are reminded that they can bring a guest flyer (not 3 or 4), and people interested in joining can visit a couple of times before we expect them to join. If you see an AMA card on the board without the club sticker attached, please introduce yourself to them. Tell them of the safety rules, expectations from our club etc. If nothing else get their AMA number and name and forward to our secretary, Ernie Schlumberger. The club can follow up and provide the individual with the information they will need for membership. Remember that its your club and your expected to help protect your investment in your facility.
Speaking of your facility, the club workday was held today! The response was terrific with approximately 20 club members showing up to help with the work. I would like to mention your names, but I know I would leave someone out, so I wont. These members gave up their Saturday and spent the entire day (9 AM until 5 PM) to accomplish our goal, you know who you were and the club owes you great thanks. There was a lot more trees to cut than I think anyone imagined and without your help, it would never have gotten done. WE still have some to grind up (weather permitting on Sunday) and if we dont finish this weekend we are going to rent the chipper again in a couple of weeks.
The Prez
Meeting Minutes for February 25, 2001 by Ernie Schlumberger
We started the meeting at 7:35 PM with 19 members in attendance.Officer Reports:
President, Tommy Vinci went over the Treasurers report for Dave Zeigler. The club had $315.00 in receipts from membership dues and $18.91 in expenses leaving a total of all accounts of $8347.32. Dave was unable to attend due to practice for the Science Olympiad Regional Competition. Daves kids have won the Nationals for the last 3 years running. Also, Dave Zeigler is the host for the kids Indoor Flying event at the Perry Swap Meet on Saturday March 3rd. Last year Ehobbies.com helped out, but this year Dave is on his own. He could use help with running the register and building and flying the free flight models with the kids. If youd like to help, contact Dave Zeigler.
Vice President, Tom Huckaby made a presentation for the Fayette County Mentor Program (He and Dave Zeigler are mentors). The middle school is in need of 3 mentors right now. One hour a week spent with an underprivileged child helps them a lot. Contact Tom Huckaby for more details.
Secretary, Ernie Schlumberger had nothing new to report.
Tommy Vinci then mentioned the Field Work day this Saturday February 24th. It will begin around 9-10 A.M. and we already have a chipper rented. We plan on clearing the small pines to the left of the runway between the pond and large oak tree.
Old Business:
We discussed the annual donation to our field owners charity (WinShape Homes). We decided to give $500.00 in the spring and the proceeds from the Fall Charity Fun Fly in October.
New Business:
An Idea of adding Astro-turf ramps from the fence openings to the runway was brought up by Phil Meyers. He was given the job of looking into it. Then Skip Getelman brought up the recurring idea [Dade county Voter] of installing a paved runway with taxiways on either end. The discussion was quite lengthy [hanging chads] and included things like installing SOD, looking into buying our field,[pregnant chads] getting a lease on our field and looking into getting another field. The general consensus was that without having a lease or ownership of the field it makes installing a paved runway [here we go again] financially risky. The idea was tabled until Tommy Vinci and Tom Huckaby meet with the field owners son this month to discuss our options on securing our field.
New Members:
This month there were no new members applicants in attendance, but Secretary, Ernie Schlumberger stood in for Andy Willetts to join the club. Lets all welcome Andy to the Fayette Flyers.
Broken Prop Award:
This month there were no nominations.
Tip of the Month: Much more fun stuff to come.
Tom Huckaby demonstrated how to install hard points in a balsa tail for the purpose of installing flying wires. First he used a piece of ¼" brass tube in a drill motor to drill holes where the flying wires would mount. Then he took a ¼" dowel rod and lightly sanded it so that it fit snugly in the balsa holes. He normally uses heated 30-minute epoxy to glue the hard points in then saws off the dowel rod and sands it flush. Then when you install the screws to attach the flying wires, they cant crush the balsa wood. This technique could be used in any application that requires installing screws into balsa wood (hatches, cowls, etc.). The hard wood of the dowel rod will not strip out like balsa wood will.WHEN YOUR PLANE TRIES TO TELL YOU
(came from the website by Clay Ramskill of Seven Towers RC Club, Arlington, Texas)Once upon a time your author had a new pattern plane. On the first few days of flying it, everything was fine. But one day, on the first flight, it required several clicks of down trim (odd ) after take off and after each turn or maneuver, the pitch trim would be off again (VERY odd ). Only when it took full down stick to fly inverted (JEEPERS!) was your author smart enough to realize something was wrong. After landing, the problem was obvious: I had not bolted the wing to the fuselage!
But the plane DID "try to tell me"; I just wasnt listening. Only new, tight-fitting wing dowels had saved the plane from destruction it certainly wasnt the pilot! Recapping later, I thought of a number of things that would have caused similar symptoms: servo or servo tray loose, bad servo centering, broken elevator hinges, loose control horn, et cetera. The point is, ALL of those things are BAD! And with the plane not behaving properly, WHY did I keep flying??
Just suppose youre getting an occasional glitch from your radio; something that doesnt normally happen. This could be an antenna problem; it could be metal-to-metal vibration causing home-grown interference, or a loose crystal. Will any of these get better while you keep flying? And speaking of vibration, what if you start hearing it in the air? Its your plane talking to you loose muffler, engine mount, worn wing dowel holes, loose cowl mounting. Again, such problems dont get better, only worse.
One more example this has happened to all but the most careful pilots. Your engine goes lean and sags at the top of a loop. Its TELLING you that the mixture is too lean. But dont listen and keep flying; a minute later, while doing another loop, youre suddenly dead stick!
The sky gods know we have enough problems that pop up suddenly, and we dont have any opportunity to prevent them. Other times the plane "tells you" that there is, or will be, a problem. Unless you really enjoy repairing or rebuilding LISTEN! Cutting a hop short to check out a possible problem is much quicker (and vastly cheaper) than building another plane!

Greetings From Hodges Hobbies;
We survived Perry for another year!! It was a big show again as
usual.
I think this was the biggest crowd yet. The GAMA guys deserve a pat on the back for
a great event. I just wish I had more time to browse but I don't ever have the time.
The indoor electric fly-in Friday evening was interesting but I don't think very many knew
about it. I think next year, with a little more promotion, the electric fly-in will be
much larger. I was interested in the AMA membership meeting that was held at the end of
the show at 4:00 PM in the conference room. It was hosted by Dave Brown, AMA president,
and its purpose was to discuss things currently happening with the AMA and give members a
chance to ask questions and voice any concerns or opinions. I was not able to attend
because we were loading up and I was disappointed to hear only about a dozen people showed
up. Again, I don't think many knew about it or maybe it didn't interest them. Our
first Quickie Race of the year will be next Saturday March 10 at 10 AM. We will run our
usual A and B class with the Quickie planes but we would also like to start a new class
for beginners or anyone else interested in giving the racing a try. We are going to have a
race for Tiger Sticks with Thunder Tiger Pro .46 engine. There are a lot of these planes
flying and this would be a great and simple way for you to give the racing a try and have
a lot of fun without having to build a special race plane. So if you have a Stick, then
bring it out Saturday and have some fun. We will furnish the prop and fuel.
The Hodges Hobbies web site has been down for about 2 weeks and is still not
working. The server has been installing new equipment. Talked Robin last night and he said
it should be fixed soon. If you have any questions about the Tiger Stick race give
me a call. It will be low key, informal, and a lot of fun. It is easy so don't think you
are not ready. Come on out and we will help you get started.
See you Saturday, Mac
