PRESIDENT’S CORNER Tommy Vinci

I have just spent a eternity at the field this past weekend competing in the KING PEACH electric glider contest that Mike McGowan worked so hard to orchestrate. Mike, you did good, and I know I speak for all of those in attendance when I say…. Thanks! He had competitors from Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Mississippi, Florida and of course Georgia. A dinner (Cajun Shrimp Boil) was held at the field after flying on Saturday along with a lot of great conversation. We completed the contest around noon on Sunday and everyone headed for home.

The FAYETTE FLYERS held their own against the competition and managed to take some first place positions. I am sure Mike is going to do an article for the newsletter so I’ll let him cover all of that. Most of the contestants from out of town were using this as a warm up event for the NAT’s later this summer, they are some of the best in the country. Our club is fortunate in that we also have some of he best soaring pilots in the country, and they are willing to share their knowledge and experience. If it hadn’t been for Mike (and Ernie’s glue) I wouldn’t have done as well as I did. I’m looking forward to the next one, who knows I might even go to the NAT’s with them!

Got to go, working on several projects, both here and at work!

KING PEACH ELECTRIC CHAMPIONSHIP 2000

by Mike McGowan

The electric fliers of the Fayette Flyers club were treated to excellent flying conditions during the King Peach electric Championship this year. The visiting flyers left very pleased with their experience. Not just because of the weather but mostly because of the efforts of Randy Hawkins, Ernie Schlumberger, Claire Schlumberger, Tommy Vinci, and Charles Perkins.

Grand Champion Bill Jenkins [Memphis] and His Foote Westerner

Tommy and Charles had the field in immaculate condition that all the visitors commented upon. Tommy provided the cooking equipment for the great Cajun Cookout on Saturday night. (We did learn that Tommy would rather get his hands burned by boiling water than be caught wearing a "bellied" Red-nosed reindeer mitt!)

Randy, Ernie, & Claire were the "movers and shakers" for this event. As a result we had great "hats", "mugs", score board, score cards, doughnuts, water, and "coolies".[blood ,sweat and tears hey.. great name for a rock group]

Geezio Tommy I'm running out of Ernie's Glue!

Over 150 flights were made without incident; many memorable and some forgettable.[most of mine, less one] A great "race" with "high tech" aircraft was demonstrated.[Geeez a Wingo?]

Bottom line, ….the electric fliers had a great time! They are looking forward to next year! - MIKE!

Meeting Minutes: May 25, 2000

Officer Reports:

President, Tommy Vinci, started the meeting at 7:35 p.m. with 18 members and 4 member applicants and guests in attendance.

Vice President, Randy Hawkins, then gave a report that the club is down to 12 paper mailings per month on The Flypaper. He then mentioned that he may soon stop the paper mailings and just bring a few copies to the meeting to pass out for those that can’t see it online. He also discussed the upcoming Spring Fun Fly on May 28th. The club will provide hotdogs/drinks, and everyone is to bring a covered dish or dessert.

Treasurer, Dave Zeigler, then went over the financial report. For May, the club had $105 in expenses and $525 in membership income to bring the total balance of all accounts to $9897.77. Dave then talked about the Science Olympiad Nationals that he just returned from. This year, it was held in Spokane Washington. McIntosh Highschool won the Gold for rubber band powered aircraft for the 5th straight year. Also mentioned was the Kids Spring Fling on Saturday, June 3rd (rain day Sunday June 4th). The field will be closed to all other flying that day from 10am-4pm.

Tommy then talked about last weeks Electric Sailplane (AMA sanctioned) Event. This year there were 12 contestants who paid $10 per event to compete with a total of $480 taken in to cover expenses of trophies, cold drinks and etc. Out of town contestants came from Louisiana, Pennsylvania, Florida and Tennessee.

Secretary, Ernie Schlumberger, reported that there are currently 125 members in the club.

Old Business: OH Disco in Daytona in the 70s ya should have been there.

Tommy said the material for adding on to the shed had been ordered and construction will take place in the next month. Also, the fence along the runway will be replaced soon.

New Business:

Earl Robinson brought up the idea of looking into a club partnership in buying a permanent property which could have a paved runway, if club desired, a clubhouse, water, electricity. He gave an example of a 36 acre piece of property near Hwy 74 and Hwy 85 intersection which would cost about $150,000. Some more new business, a proposal was submitted from Charles Perkins that if the club bought 2 each, 6 foot Bush Hogs for him to cut the field, Charles would then cut the field for the next 6 cuttings free. Normally, it costs $750-$1000 to have the upper and lower fields cut. So, 6 cuttings would be the money to replace his old bush hogs, then he would own them after the 6 cuttings. The proposal was seconded and unanimously voted for.

New Members:

This month, the club welcomed 4 new members: Terry Smith,  Brian Bouthiller,   Eugene Morgan and Scott Ford. Please welcome them to the club and help them get up and flying.

Broken Prop:

This month the winner of a "Kamikaze" patch is David Barnes for his daring attempt at Night Flying Randy Hawkins’s Wingo for which he was awarded a Night Flying Patch for also. The last thing heard before the crash was "Give it right…I AM !!!…No the other right!"[ah it's flying now, no big deal Doctor Dave]

Frequency control is a matter of safety, but economics and common courtesy are also considerations. Any club the size of ours must have some standards which all members follow in an effort to avoid frequency violations that may result in property damage and/or personal injury.

This suggested addition to our By-Laws is offered in this vein, and is in no way intended to offend any member, to hamper the enjoyment of our hobby, or to add rules just for the sake of adding rules.

Frequency Control (Replaces "D") All transmitters* will have a clearly marked plaque affixed to the antenna, properly identifying the operating channel of the transmitter, in keeping with AMA radio control utilization plan part number 2.2 thru 2.2.3.2

2) Upon arriving at the flying site, those members wishing to fly shall review the frequency control board prior to removing any equipment from their vehicle. If the desired frequency is open, the member should , at that time, select the numbered pin that corresponds to this channel and clip it on his transmitter antenna, making certain that the two numbers are identical. The member also should clip his current AMA card to the same frequency peg on the board.

This action will:

A. Display the member’s current AMA card.

B. Identify the flyer on any specific channel.

Members who bring more than one transmitter are cautioned to carefully select the proper pin for each transmitter. Members who will be flying on multiple frequencies are urged to "pin" only one transmitter at a time.

Upon completion of flight, as a matter of courtesy to others wishing to fly, members should either remove their AMA card and replace the ID pin on the board, or ask other members if they are waiting on channel "such and such".

In the unfortunate event of a frequency violation that results in the damage or destruction or a plane or property damage and/or personal injury, the unpinned or improperly pinned pilot shall be considered in error, and restitution to the offended pilot is the responsibility of the offending pilot.**

The Fayette Flyers organization will not assume, nor be put in the position of mediator or referee in such cases. It shall be the responsibility of the parties involved to resolve the issue in a fair and reasonable manner. The extent of the involvement of the Fayette Flyers organization will not exceed possible withdrawal of membership should the offending parties fail to conduct themselves in an honorable manner.

Instructors will be responsible for the proper pinning of transmitters for any students they may be assisting.

* All transmitters operating on channel 00-60 will be of the narrow band type.

All transmitters sold as new on or after 3/1/93 are narrow band type.

Transmitters displaying an R/CMA AMA gold sticker are narrow band type.

Transmitters manufactured after 12/31/94 will no longer have a gold narrow band sticker affixed.

** Parents and/or guardians will be responsible for property damage (including aircraft) and personal injury caused by minor children.
